I am aware of my surroundings, and pay attention to corners as I walk around and pass them on the streets. I guess one could say I have a martial mentality.

That said. I respect the spiritual/religous aspect of Aikido. However I am also aware of it's bujutsu roots. My Sensei and my sensei before him were aware of this as well.

So. This is my first time reading your blog,...Hi Rick,

This is my first time reading your blog, and it has definitely given me some things to consider.

From what I've read, O-Sensei was not a soldier (though he certainly trained many), and while his early life was certainly more martially-oriented, his later life was more focused on the spiritual aspects of what became known as Aikido.

I definitely understand your perspective, in that you participate in pre-arranged fights (that is, the two people in the ring have agreed to fight each other), and the goal is to win. In real life, if someone is aggressive towards me, and I return that aggression, what have I done except perpetuated that aggression? If I have an opportunity to neutralize that aggression, and I don't take it, I am no better than the person initiating the aggression. There is no winner there, only survivors.

O-Sensei's goal was peace, and one cannot beget peace with violence. I agree that one must be prepared for "non-aiki" attacks; I also think that the philosophy cannot be ignored for the sake of expedience, otherwise it makes the art shallow - simply another method of kicking the crap out of someone. For example, when I practice as uke, and execute a shomenuchi, I fully intend to hit that person. That being said, I do so because I care about nage, and want them to learn how to defend themselves. My goal isn't to hurt them, but to help them prepare to handle someone coming at them.

All this being said, I fully recognize that these are my own perspectives, and just like a certain other body part, everyone's got one.Matt_Middletonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04374451732214738955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6839400990871532802.post-90421420041220833662010-10-23T08:18:20.630-07:002010-10-23T08:18:20.630-07:00Hi Rasim

I find that disturbing. When asked about the combative aspect of aikido many teachers simply act as if that is a foolish question. I believe that aikido can be a state of the art fighting style. But one needs to study judo, karate, and other arts before being able to unlock the benefits of aikido. One final thought. Aikido can be many things for many people. There are students that need spiritual guidance, and there are those that need real fight training. Fortunately, aikido can be all of those things. It is just a matter of focus.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04177266679390107731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6839400990871532802.post-71984611398174326712010-03-22T09:02:35.303-07:002010-03-22T09:02:35.303-07:00I try my best to practice and study Aikido.
The &...I try my best to practice and study Aikido.

The "practice" part is for self defense, this is the martial aspect of Aikido.

The "study" part is the philosophical aspect that should help us be better human beings.

My opinion is that this is the Art of Aikido as a whole, I think that dojo classes show you the techniques and some philosophy, but is up to the student to train and research more if you want to be good at it.

In my case I try to read a lot about the Founder and about the spiritual aspect of aikido, but I also want to have an effective technique that can be used to protect the people I love or myself, so every now and then I go to a boxing gym or an mma gym and train a little bit more real and it has been a great help.

I love Aikido, and I think only serious training can help you have a realistic and clear perspective of combat or defense, but this is not the only benefit of Aikido, it has a lot to offer (relaxation, control over yourself, keep good health) but a good advise for the people who ONLY go to the Dojo to be in harmony with the universe (nothing wrong with this, I do it too)don't think that this will be effective in combat or you'll find an unpleasant surprise.

O Sensei faced situations where his life was at stake, his Aikido worked, he was a warrior and a gentleman, ask yourself if your Aikido (or any Art)works, if not train more.

Combat arts are not magical you have to train a lot for any art to be effective, so don't think that for being part of a Dojo and going every day it makes you good at it if you are not aware of the reality of a fight, even in MMA, some people think hat just for being part of an MMA gym they can beat any other classical art practitioner but remember nobody is invincible and some people are very good fighters without ever stepping in a dojo, so just be clear about your goals, and train hard.

Good luck to everyone in their training.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11891131212246798297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6839400990871532802.post-85776005657586374422010-03-21T14:22:57.849-07:002010-03-21T14:22:57.849-07:00Rick

Just so there is no ambiguity...I want to be ...Rik

Just so there is no ambiguity...I want to be clear that I agree with you. I'm not sure if that came across first-time.

I'm probably the least-experienced person posting here..not even shodan yet..but I have met shodan, nidan, and higher from other organisations - people with double, treble my time in the art - who I felt would not deal well (if at all) with a typical hook or jab from a Saturday-night chancer ('not an aiki attack!'). Have been told by these people 'don't grab so tight, we don't train like that'...hmmm.

The relaxation/mind-body coordination is in and of itself very useful and fulfilling, and I find it essential for navigating the quagmire of modern life. However, whilst I certainly hope I don't find myself in a real fight anytime soon, we train with that in mind. How else can you? That's what my 'live in truth' comment concerned. Otherwise we may just as well be doing yoga. That's not to say we need be animals, but we need to be aware that other people will be.

On another related note, I'm surprised to see how many people don't believe any form of body conditioning is necessary in aikido...I mean, I'm not going to be doing hundreds of back-of-wrist press-ups anytime soon, but you've got to keep in some semblance of shape, right? I mean, do these people even do suburi?

Again - with the caveat of my inexperience stated - I've often felt that the path to self-improvement (body and mind) is only hindered by delusion and a lack of self-awareness. And even with my short time in, I've seen and met quite a lot of people in various 'arts' who are quite clearly delusional to some degree.

Best

ApeAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05536223724818520116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6839400990871532802.post-80859528058522293042010-03-21T12:51:25.083-07:002010-03-21T12:51:25.083-07:00Fernando
